Medical research body set to draft guidelines for Gene Therapeutics

New guidelines are being drawn up by the Indian Council of Medical Research for the clinical trials and the development of biological therapeutics.

Hyderabad: Gene therapeutic products are a new line of drugs engaging the attention of the medical fraternity in India to deal with non-modifiable risk factors which lead to the onset of lifestyle disorders, neuro-generative disorders and genetic diseases.

New guidelines are being drawn up by the Indian Council of Medical Research for the clinical trials and the development of biological therapeutics and other new drugs that will be carried out based on the genetic make-up of Indians. With gene therapy being approved globally, it is important to have a bank of the genetic make-up of Indians which will give an insight into diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s and many others. The therapeutics from the clinical trials will fall under the category of new drugs and it will be first taken up only on academic basis.
