Hyderabad: Blind spot blamed for mishap

The protesters did not allow officials to take the bodies to a morgue from the spot.

Hyderabad: Locals staged a massive protest following Sunday’s accident on the Jadcherla-Kalwakurthy highway which claimed the lives of 12 persons, saying the deplorable condition of the road was responsible for the mishap.

The protesters did not allow officials to take the bodies to a morgue from the spot. Due to the protest there was a huge traffic jam for about 15 km on the highway. There is a blind curve at the spot where drivers cannot spot vehicles coming from the opposite direction. Locals said officials had failed to rectify the ‘black spot’. Several fatal accidents had occurred there, they said.

The villagers demanded that the officials announce ex-gratia for the victims. Mahbubnagar superintendent of police Rema Rajeshwari rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the villagers but in vain. Excise minister V. Srinivas Goud also reached the spot to pacify the villagers.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao expressed condolences to the families of victims and instructed officials to ensure that the injured get proper treatment in hospitals.

The victims were identified as T. Shivaleela, 55, V. Chennamma, 48, M. Venka-tamma, 45, N. Chennam-ma, 47, M. Venkatamma, 45, L. Shivaji, 45, L. Chandi, 35, M. Bechani, 40, Sakru Naik, 28, Ellamma, 45, K. Balamani, 45, and C, Salamma, 34.
