Tamil Nadu to establish wind solar hybrid project
Chennai: Electricity minister P. Thagamani on Thursday announced setting up of a 10-mega watt wind solar hybrid project at a cost of Rs 60 crore at Kayathar in Tuticorin.
“A 10 MW wind solar hybrid plant will be established at a cost of Rs 60 crore in Kayathar,” the minister said in his reply to the demand for the grants for his department in the Assembly.
The minister’s announcement coincides with the draft national wind-solar hybrid policy released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in June this year.
The hybrid plants are expected to optimally utilise the transmission infrastructure as both the wind and solar power generation complements each other.
Since wind generations pick up in the evening and peaks at night while solar generation will available during the daytime, the same transmission infrastructure could be used for the both renewable sources.
The existing wind farms have a scope of adding solar power capacity and TN which as 7,600 MW wind power installation, has huge potential to add solar power.
Mr Thangamani also announced that 5,000 persons would be given technical training on solar power development at a cost of Rs 27,000 per head to the total of Rs 13.50 crore. The shutters of Lower Mettur Barrage Power House I and II would be repaired at a cost Rs 10 crore, he said.
He also announced that power outage helpline number 1912 service would be established to remaining 28 circles of Tangedco at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. He said that new office buildings for superintendent engineers in Chennai South and Nagapattinam at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The air pre-heater in the second unit of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station would be renovated at a cost of Rs 6.55 crore, he said.
AIADMK govt ruined Tangedco: M. Karunanidhi
Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Thursday alleged that Tangedco was ruined by the actions of the AIADMK government which purchased electricity for higher rates from private players.
Reacting to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s charge that the DMK had ruined the Tangedco, DMK leader in a statement here said the government was not keen on improving the infrastructure for power production and wants to procure electricity.
The Udangudi power project was not implemented and the Ennore thermal power plant did not start production, he said.
