Massive car parking coming up at Central Square in Chennai
Chennai: Spread over three layers underground, on both sides of the underground CMRL station at Chennai Central, a space for parking 2,000 cars could prove to be a boon for rail and metro users.
The parking space and subways get a good chunk of the Rs 400 crore sanctioned by the state government for developing the heart of the city transport to Central Square.
“The metro station would ensure complete access using underground ways to Chennai Central railway station, Park Town and Chennai Beach stations and RGGG hospital,” said a senior CMRL official.
Currently, MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System), bus, trains and suburban railway network intersect at Chennai Central. In future, metro rail will add to transport traffic here.
The design of the three-layered Metro station, extending 100 feet beneath, is such that the first layer is the concourse level with ticket area. The next layer is the metro line connecting Egmore station (on Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount line). The tunnel beneath it, the third layer is Washermanpet to Chennai Airport line.
On the two layers of platforms underneath the concourse levels, there will be platform screen doors that would open as trains arrive. There will also be pathways for passenger evacuation in case of emergencies.
“There will be four subways, two on either sides of the station. The parking and subways will provide proper linkages to all major places at Chennai Central,” an official said.
The Central Square would also boast of eateries, ATM facilities, toilets, and food court, according to officials, apart from check-in facility for flights.
