Flood protection works worth Rs 112 crore around Chennai to start

Chennai: The state government will take up flood protection works around Chennai at a cost of Rs 112 crore, besides coastal protection works at an estimate of Rs 109 crore.

Heavy rainfall occurring over a short period of time creates flood situation in many rivers, the policy note submitted by PWD minister K. Palaniswami noted. The coastline in most other districts are vulnerable to damages due to cyclonic storms during north-east monsoon.

To mitigate such damages and to protect lives and properties, rubble mound sea walls along the coast and angularly places groynes are being constructed in 13 districts.

Project reports are being prepared for improvements and rehabilitation of Kattalai high level canal irrigation system under the Cauvery modernisation scheme.

Desilting of Vaigai, Pechiparai, Mettur, Parappalar and Amaravathy reservoirs would be taken up after detailed project report. A total of 109 check dams and nine bed dams had been constructed and six new canals and supply channels were dug in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur and Vellore, the policy note said.
