On behalf of the Governor and the Chief Minister, city public prosecutor, M.L. Jegan, filed the complaints before the court recently.

Chennai: Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan appeared before the principal sessions court on Thursday in connection with two separate defamation cases filed by Governor K. Rosaiah and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

On behalf of the Governor and the Chief Minister, city public prosecutor, M.L. Jegan, filed the complaints before the court recently. Jegan said that in an exclusive interview to a private television channel, Elangovan made defamatory remarks against the Governor and Chief Minister relating to appointment of Vice-Chancellors in State Universities. Elangovan alleged that irregularities had been committed in the appointments. The programme was telecast on April 30, 2016.

When the matter came up earlier, Principal Sessions Judge, G. Jayachandran directed Elangovan to appear before the court on August 4. Elangovan complied with the court direction. Directing the authorities to handover complaint copies to Elangovan, the judge adjourned the matter to September 14 for further hearing.

Meanwhile, MDMK leader Vaiko appeared before the III additional sessions court in connection with a sedition case registered against him by Q-Branch in 2008.

The police alleged that Vaiko made an “objectionable and provocative speech” at an indoor meeting at Esplanade on October 21, 2008. Vaiko, it was alleged, vehemently supported the erstwhile LTTE.

During the three-hour long hearing, the judge M. Arul Mugurgan posed 35 questions to him relating to the case. After recording Vaiko's reply, the judge posted the matter to August 12.
