Heavy Rains Batter Nandyal, Many Areas Flooded, Roads Submerged

Kurnool: Heavy rainfall led to flooding in many parts of Velugodu, Atmakur, Pamulapadu and Pagidyala mandals on Wednesday.

Velugodu received the highest rainfall of 11.7 cm, followed by Atmakur with 10.5 cm, Pamulapadu 9.6 cm and Pagidyala 2.4 cm.

The continuous downpour has resulted in transportation disruptions. Areas such as Dwaraka Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar and CP Nagar in Velugodu town were affected as floodwaters entered houses in low-lying areas, causing damage to essential commodities.

Rivulets in the area were overflowing and waters ran onto the roads, leading to transportation problems in Velpanuru, Regada, Guduru and Abdullapuram.

Nandyal district has been severely impacted, it receiving only 536 mm of rainfall out of the season’s expected 2,226.9 mm. The district, which previously faced a rainfall deficit of 77 per cent, has improved its tally to an excess of 7.2 per cent.

In June, when the district usually receives an average rainfall of 76.8 mm, it has received only 18.5 mm. Several mandals like Kothapalle, Rudravaram, Nandikotkuru, Pamulapadu and Srisailam experienced a 100 per cent deficit in rainfall. The heavy rains reduced the rainfall shortage in the district.

Kurnool district still faces a 26.8 per cent deficit compared to normal rainfall levels. Mandals such as Pathikonda, Adoni, Peddakabudur and Tuggali in Kurnool district have rainfall deficits of over 90 per cent.

Overall, the district has received 736.2 mm of rainfall out of the expected 2,020.8 mm, resulting in a 64 per cent shortage by June-end. However, the recent thunderstorm activity has brought some improvement to the scenario.
