KURNOOL: What is in a name? It means a lot if it is the name of late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, father of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Cuddapah had suffered mutations to its name when late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy became the Chief Minister.
First, the spelling of Cuddapah district was changed to Kadapa by former Chief Minister late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in the year 2005 to make it resonate more with the colloquial dialect of the region.
After the tragic death of Rajasekhar Reddy in a helicopter crash in September 2009, then Chief Minister K. Rosaiah got the name of the district changed to YSR District as a befitting tribute to the leader who hailed from Kadapa. But unfortunately, ever since the name change was effected, none of the people, including the district administration used the name YSR district. They suffixed or prefixed Kadapa to the nomenclature.
The Municipal Corporation office depicted the district’s name as Kadapa Y.S.R District while Office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police used Y.S.R District Kadapa.
In most of the correspondence, done by the ordinary citizens, normally Kadapa was used, without bothering to write YSR district which should have been complied with by law.
Now, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is expected to take a stand on insisting the administration to stick to using YSR District for Kadapa and drop Kadapa in all its cognate forms, an official said.
July 8 is observed as Farmers’ Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to address a public meeting at Jammalamadugu, to give sops to farmers. In the same meeting, he is expected to announce that the name of the Kadapa district will henceforth strictly be termed as YSR District, the source said.
“With the re-organisation of Parliamentary constituencies into districts, the YSR District may be divided into Rajampet and YSR District. This will reduce the geography of YSR District. Will Jagan spare YSR District from being divided into two districts as a mark of respect to his father?” an official asked....
