Centre seeks more information on Kochi Metro phase II before nod

The second phase can ensure safe journey for women at night in this stretch, Mr Eden told the minister.

Kochi: Union Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday said certain details will be sought from the state government regarding the second phase of Kochi metro from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Kaloor to Kakkanad and then take the steps to get the clearance from the Public Investment Board for the project.

This was informed by Hibi Eden MP who met the Minister with a petition to speed up the process for clerances including that of the Union Cabinet and PIB for the second phase of the project.

The MP pointed out that the 11.3 km stretch with 11 stations assumes a lot of significance as it connects to Infopark which has 25,000 employees including techies, the Smart City which is also a major IT station and the district collectorate. He said that the stretch expects 50,000 passengers for Metro daily. The second phase can ensure safe journey for women at night in this stretch, Mr Eden told the minister. The project had got in-principle clearance last February.

Chalakkudy MP Benny Behanan who was with Mr Eden appealed to the minister to consider taking the third phase of Kochi Metro to Cochin international airport.
