Where do we park this problem, BBMP?

Searching for suitable place to build multi-level parking lots in CBD, says Palike official.

Bengaluru: If you are heading to Central Business District areas, the biggest worry is about finding a parking space. The absence of it leads to vehicles being parked haphazardly on roadsides, eating into the motorable space.

The situation is especially bad during peak hours, and traffic jams in the CBD have a cascading effect, throwing traffic out of gear across the city. Some private parking spaces are available, but they are invariably full most of the time.

A senior traffic police officer said that ample parking spaces are available for cars in CBD areas, but people have to walk a bit to their destination. “For example, people visiting Brigade Road can park their cars on the left side of the Army Club and walk. But the issue is that the people visiting Brigade Road and MG Road want to park on these roads, which is not possible. When they can’t find the parking space, they double park, leading to congestion,” he said.

“The government should take a decision that four-wheelers are barred from parking in areas where there is heavy movement of people and vehicles. The problem will persist till then,” he said.

On providing parking spaces in CBD areas and finding suitable spots, a BBMP officer said that paid parking spaces are available on Brigade Road and in Garuda Mall. “But we know it’s not sufficient to fit in all the cars which come in for parking. We have plans of constructing a multi-level car parking, but we have not found a suitable spot. Once we find a place, we will work towards it. We know that parking space is required in the CBD and that it will help in removing vehicles from roads and will ease the movement of traffic,” he said.

Road users are furious with parking on roads and said that weekends are worse. Sonu Sharma, a bank employee working on MG Road, said, “No one is overseeing parking of vehicles. During the weekends, four wheelers are parked everywhere on the roads. This hardly leaves any space for vehicles to move on the roads, leading to traffic jams. It is time the government provided parking space and banned parking of vehicles on roads in CBD.”
