No cut in oil imports from Iran for now

New Delhi has also been encouraged by the recent comments of a US government functionary.

New Delhi: No formal orders have been issued as yet by the government on cutting oil imports from Iran even as New Delhi has been receiving “informal indications” from the United States that has made it (India) hopeful that some kind of arrangement may be worked out so that the Indo-Iranian cooperation on the Chabahar port project is not affected, sources said on Wednesday.

New Delhi has also been encouraged by the recent comments of a US government functionary that the US is prepared to “work with countries that are reducing their (Iranian oil) imports on a case by case basis”.

“Iran is an important near-neighbour. We are an oil-dependent economy. Ultimately we have to act in what is in our national interest,” sources said.
