M Venkaiah Naidu says Presidential poll is all about Constitution

M. Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said the Constitution of India was the ideology for the Presidential election.

Hyderabad: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said the Constitution of India was the ideology for the Presidential election. He appeared to be referring to a statement by UPA Presidential candidate Meira Kumar that the election should be ideology based. “The Presidential election is not a fight for ideology. Commitment to the Constitution alone is the ideology. The President is the head of the Constitution, but all policy making is vested with the Union Council of Ministers,” Mr Venkaiah Naidu said while introducing NDA Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind at a function organised by the TRS at Jalavihar.

Stating that there was nothing wrong in a contest in a Parlia-mentary democracy, Mr Naidu said it would have been more appropriate to have Mr Kovind elected unanimously to the top post. “Having read the mood of nation, the UPA should not have fielded its candidate. Having tasted the power for over five decades and after pursuing divide and rule policy, some parties have started talking of ideology which is most unfortunate,” he said. He thanked Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for the support extended to Mr Kovind; he said TRS was the first party to do so outside the NDA alliance.
