Don't use social media to spread communal ill-will: Maulana Maqsood

\"Messages that promote peace and communal harmony can be shared but not those that spread hatred,\" Maulana Maqsood said.

Bengaluru: Maulana Muhammad Maqsood Imran Rashadi, the khateeb and imam of Jama Masjid in the city, has cautioned against the use of social media to spread communal disharmony. In a press release on Tuesday, he contended that social media like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter were misguiding young minds. While technology threw open many avenues to increase one's knowledge, it was of late being misused to spread communal hatred, he regretted.

"This is leading gullible youngsters to quarrel on the streets. Therefore, today's youngsters must refrain from using these channels and rely more on gaining knowledge from books, newspapers and libraries," he stressed, noting that youngsters easily got carried away by their prejudices. "Without even giving a second thought, they just forward meassages to their friends and groups, which at times turn viral and the situation goes out of hand," the imam regretted, advising youth to join hands in building communal harmony by picking up good qualities from every community. "Messages that promote peace and communal harmony can be shared but not those that spread hatred," Maulana Maqsood said.
