Decision on bypoll to R K Nagar soon: EC

Which was cancelled in April due to allegations of rampant use of money.

Chennai: Election Commission will soon take a call on holding by-election to RK Nagar constituency, which was cancelled in April due to allegations of rampant use of money.

Outgoing Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said an assessment on the situation in the constituency would be completed soon after which the agency would take a call on holding of elections.

He also said the EC consultation with the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu was assessing the prevailing situation and looking at how a more effective strategy can be devised against bribing of voters, pending legislation.

The EC decided against conducting the election within six months of the seat getting vacant due to the demise of the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa after it cancelled the by-poll scheduled for April 12.

The EC, while cancelling the bypoll, had issued a detailed order highlighting the methods used to bribe voters and how money was distributed systemically to voters.
