Uncivil remarks against woman debtor: 2 bank officials held in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY: The Palakarai police here registered a case against two officials of a private bank in connection with the suicide attempt by a bank loan defaulter.

Police said they registered a case against the IDFC bank managers Selvapriya and Moorthy, following 33-year-old Sudha, a team leader of women self-help group of Sengulam colony attempting suicide at her residence by pouring kerosene and setting fire to herself on Saturday.

Police said Ms. Sudha took this extreme step following the bank officials allegedly using derogatory remarks against her, for not repaying the loan installments regularly.

They further said the women self-help group led by Sudha took a loan of `18,000 from the bank and was to repay the loan installments every week. Although they started paying the installments regularly, at the initial stage, for the last three months they could not repay the loan installments.

On Saturday, the bank officials went to Sudha's house and asked her to repay the loan, but she pleaded her inability which ended with heated arguments between both sides. It was alleged that the bank officials made some derogatory remarks against Sudha, who unable to bear the humiliation went to her house and attempted suicide.

Hearing Sudha's cries, neighbours rushed her to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government hospital here, where the doctors declared that the patient is suffered 40 per cent burn injuries.

Based on the complaint of Sudha, police registered a case against the bank officials and are investigating.
