UDF MLAs, MPs to skip school reopening

Opp Leader Ramesh Chennithala said the ramifications of the report will be far-reaching as it was being implemented without reaching a consensus.

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF MLAs and MPs will boycott the 'Preveshanolsavam' on the school reopening day on Thursday in protest against the government's decision to implement the Khadar committee report which proposes a single directorate for the education sector in the state.

As part of the first phase of implementation of the report, the Directorate of Public Instruction, Higher Secondary Directorate and Vocational Higher Secondary Directorate will be brought under the Directorate of General Education.

Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said the ramifications of the report will be far-reaching as it was being implemented without reaching a consensus.

"The LDF government has converted the teachers in the general education department into two layers and the quality of the secondary education has been destroyed," he said and added that the government had come up with Thuglaq reforms.

He said he had asked the government to implement the Khadar committee report only after holding talks with all the political parties, teachers association representatives and other stakeholders. Though an adjournment motion was brought in the Assembly, it was rejected.

"The government has approached the issue politically with a narrow vision, he said.

The state-level inauguration of Preveshanolsavam will be conducted by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Chembuchira Government Higher Secondary School, Thrissur, on Thursday.
