Top leaders of CPM to attend meetings in Kerala

The CPM central committee is meeting later this week in Delhi to conduct a detailed assessment of what went wrong in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and senior politburo members would attend the party meetings in Kerala to review the electoral setback suffered in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

The CPM central committee is meeting later this week in Delhi to conduct a detailed assessment of what went wrong in Kerala. During the three-day meeting, the detailed report prepared by the state unit on party's electoral performance in Kerala would be discussed at length. The central leadership will prepare a short-term and long-term strategy based on the inputs provided by state secretariat, state committee and senior leaders, on regaining the lost ground especially the traditional voters of the Left.

The central leaders during their proposed visit will brief the state leadership on the steps to be taken for retrieving the base. Efforts will be made to bring back people who distanced themselves from the party on the Sabarimala issue following the false propaganda unleashed by the Sangh Parivar.

The state unit is likely to organise general body meetings at the regional and zonal level which would be addressed by the central leaders. The idea is to directly connect and interact with party functionaries at different levels.

At the central committee meeting, the state leaders are likely to raise the issue of over emphasis on installing an alternative secular government at the centre during the campaign. A section of leaders say that after Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Wayanad, the party could have tweaked the campaign. It should have stressed on the issue of strengthening the Left and increasing its strength in Parliament.

The party's emphasis on alternative secular government benefited the UDF as a sizable section of voters saw Rahul Gandhi as a formidable challenger to Narendra Modi at the Centre. Even those who preferred Left in the state, backed the Congress as they wanted to ensure the defeat of BJP.
