Tiruchy: Big leap in stroke treatment in government hospitals: Dr Saradha
Tiruchy: Under the Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) all government medical college hospitals in the state are fully equipped to treat six important diseases namely, heart attack, stroke, snake bite, poison cases, burns and accidents, according to Dr S. Saradha, dean, Dr K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College hospital here in Tiruchy.
She told newsmen here on Tuesday that within four to five hours necessary treatment will be given for these important diseases under the TAEI initiative.
She further said, under the TAEI scheme, for the last two months number of stroke-affected patients who came to the hospital in time were successfully treated at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) Tiruchy.
Dr Saradha said thanks to the 'Stroke Care by Rapid Intervention with Plasminogen activator and Thrombectomy (SCRIPT) injunction scheme, the stroke was cured by administering a single dose of 'SCRIPT' injunction, within a short duration.
In the early days, it took at least 24 hours to detect a stroke.
Now under the SCRIPT injunction scheme costing about `38,000, it is used to administer to needy patients under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, she added.
To a question, she said thanks to TAEI, the death rate has come down considerably. In fact, out of 400 heart attack patients, 395 were saved by timely intervention at MGMGH.
Dr Saradha also pointed out that in an effort to ensure speedy treatment of stroke and avoid paralysis, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is now following the hub and spoke model and the Rajaji Government General Hospital, Madurai has been selected as a pilot institution for 'Stroke Care by SCRIPT'.
Dr V. Ravikumar of Neurology department of the MGMGH said in an effort to ensure the speedy treatment of stroke and avoid paralysis, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was now following the hub and spoke model and Dr. KAPV Government medical college here is a hub centre with the Government hospitals at Srirangam, Manaparai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur as spoke centres.
DE-ADDICTION CENTRE ROW:
Referring to the de-addiction centre controversy, where alcohol addicts were allegedly subject to untold harassment which came to the light following the death of a police constable at one such centre in Tiruchy, Dr. Saradha said, "if any official complaint comes, we will take suitable action on that issue."
Dr Saradha further said a two-member medical team led by Dr Niranjana of MGMGH, inspected the de-addiction centre at K.K.Nagar here and found it lacked basic amenities for inmates.
Moreover, such inmates should be handled by qualified social workers, she added. A detained report would be submitted to the Directorate of Mental Health, Chennai, for suitable follow-up action, the dean added.
