Kochi: Patient stable,shows signs of improvement
Kochi: The health condition of the 23-year-old youth admitted with Nipah virus infection remains stable, say hospital authorities. In a statement issued on Tuesday T.R. John, Chief of Medical Services, Aster Medcity said “the patient is clinically stable, slowly improving and his fever is subsidizing”.
The district medical officer has supplied the necessary anti-viral medications as soon as the case was noticed and the hospital was able to start medications promptly, the statement added. Dr. John also said the hospital is strictly abiding by all public health protocols suggested by the district and state health authorities and closely coordinating with them.
The youth was admitted in the hospital on May 30 with complaints of fever, slurring of speech and gait imbalance. Initially, he was under the care of the neurology department.
The patient has been exhibiting the same symptoms for a week prior to his admission in the hospital. Expert opinion of Dr. Anup Warrier consultant, infectious diseases helped in screening the viral markers at a lab that led to suspicion of Nipah infection.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Ernakulam DMO immediately and the state authorities forwarded the samples to three government approved labs for further confirmation. The National Institute of Virology Pune has confirmed the infection on Tuesday.
The hospital said there is no risk for other patients and healthcare workers in the hospital.
