Chennai: Tipper lorry mows down 3 including woman, one dies

Rash driving injures, kills conservancy workers on roadside.

Chennai: A speeding tipper lorry mowed down three conservancy workers including a woman while they were cleaning garbage along the roadside in Anakapurthur in Pallavaram, in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Murugan( 42), his wife Kalaivani( 32) and her brother Aravindan (20) of Arunachalam Street in Anakaputhur in Pallavaram. Police said that they were conservancy workers at Pallavaram municipality on a temporary basis.

According to police, the incident happened after they finished their morning work to pick garbage on Chromepet- Pallavaram stretch on GST road. At around 4. 30 am when they were near Saravana Stores, Anakaputhur, a speeding tipper lorry driven recklessly, came towards them. It hit their mini garbage truck parked nearby and hit them. In the impact, Murugan died on the spot and his body was sent for postmortem.

On being informed, Chromepet traffic investigation police rushed to the spot and sent the severely injured Kalaivani to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. Kadhir is undergoing treatment at Chromepet Government Hospital. The lorry driver, identified as Shankar, fled the spot. Chromepet traffic investigation wing has registered a case and launched a search for him.

Another road accident in Madurantakam claimed the life of a 25-year-old man on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Vivek (25) of Valaiyaputhur in Madurantakam. He worked for a private company, sources said. Early on Tuesday morning, Vivek was riding his two-wheeler via Vedanthangal road towards Tambaram. He lost balance while overtaking a car and collided head-on with an MTC bus plying between Selaiyur and Vedanthangal. Vivek died on the spot, police said. Madurantakam police registered a case.

Yet another life was claimed on Tambaram- Velachery main road when a 34-year-old woman was struck down by a mini lorry after attempting to cross the road. Vijayalakshmi, 58, a resident of Thilai Ganga Nagar was reportedly crossing the road when she met her fatal end. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a private hospital in St. Thomas Mount. She apparently died of multiple and serious injuries she sustained in the accident. St Thomas Mount Traffic investigations police registered a case. The driver of the vehicle Thirumalai is in police custody.
