Bengaluru: With the rainy season on, Chief Minister Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy has asked the BBMP officials to be on high alert and ensure pothole-free roads and better solid waste management in the city.
Kumaraswamy instructed the BBMP to take all necessary preventive measures to tackle monsoon-related problems, as the city was receiving good rains with heavy winds. Meteorology department forecasts have predicted good monsoon rains this year and there was a need to monitor low-lying areas in the city and take possible steps to prevent water logging and flooding in drains and on roads, he said.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BBMP Commissioner Mr Maheshwar Rao said that the BBMP had identified over 360 critical points that would get affected during rain. However, most of the problems have been addressed and around 30 spots have some problems, which would be addressed on a war footing, he said. Besides, over 5,500 potholes have been identified and filling up of these potholes have been taken up on priority basis.
As far as major roads are concerned, the onus of repairs and filling potholes is on contractors and they are doing the work. The BBMP is checking if there are any problems with regard to the work taken up under TenderSure. The CM has assured additional funds, if required and the BBMP was looking into the need for such funds, he added.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, Kumaraswamy expressed his concern over an increase in public complaints over the city’s waste management system. He pointed out that the city's waste management system is still in bad shape. Maintaining hygiene is a priority of the govt, he said and alerted the officials to take immediate measures to improve the public services.
