Don't call me jallikattu hero: O Panneerselvam

TN CM recalled the efforts of his govt on the issue and DMK Deputy leader Duraimurugan recalled his party chief M. Karunanidhi's role on the issue.

Chennai: There was some relief in the Tamil Nadu Assembly at a time when all expected a high voltage debate following the return of the opposition DMK’ to participate in the proceedings from Monday. There was a peel of laughter when Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam urged his colleagues not to call him “jallikattu nayagan” (hero of Jallikattu – the popular bull taming sport in TN) as he will be in a fix if he was asked to tame a bull.

“If they (organisers) say that the jallikattu nayagan has arrived and he will tame the bull, then I will be in a tight spot, as I have been attending several Jallikattu events across the State,” he said. His witty appeal came after Food Minister R. Kamaraj addressed him as 'jallikattu nayagan' for playing a crucial role in facilitating the conduct of the traditional sporting event in Tamil Nadu, last year during his tenure as Chief Minister.

Mr Kamaraj and other Ministers too commended the efforts of the Tamil Nadu government in ensuring the constitution of the Cauvery Management Authority and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami recalled the efforts of his government on the issue and DMK Deputy leader Duraimurugan recalled his party chief M. Karunanidhi's role on the issue.
