Bengaluru traffic police to help identify roads that flood

BBMP officials have decided to take the help of city traffic police to identify the spots where water logging occurs on roads.

Bengaluru: It is the same story whenever it rains in the city... Roads get flooded and traffic gets piled up in all directions as the motorable space reduces. Waking up to the problem now, BBMP officials have decided to take the help of city traffic police to identify the spots where water logging occurs on roads.

Often, traffic police are seen clearing water to ensure a smooth flow of traffic in different parts of the city. A traffic police constable, who did not want to be named, said, “Whenever it rains near Whitefield and surrounding areas, roads get flooded. We try to clear the water, but find that there are no shoulder drains for water to go as they are choked with garbage and debris.

The BBMP should clean drains regularly and also the public should be more responsible and not dump garbage in drains. Though it is not our duty, we clear water from roads. Otherwise, people would be stranded on roads for hours. If water logging is avoided on main roads, we are sure that the city can avoid much of the traffic jam during rains.”

A senior BBMP officer said, “We have seen on social media websites how traffic policemen work hard to clear water from roads. Traffic policemen will have a better idea as to why water logging occurs in a particular area as they would have seen it firsthand. We have suggested to our other senior officers to hold a meeting with traffic police officials and take their help to clear water from roads.” He said, “The idea has been discussed and a decision will be taken at the earliest, as it would help commuters.”
