'Wanted to be a doctor from an early age,' says Bihar girl who topped NEET 2018
New Delhi: Bihar girl Kalpana Kumari on Monday bagged the top rank in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical and dental colleges across the country with the maximum number of candidates clearing the exam belonging to Uttar Pradesh.
The 18-year-old, who hails from Sheohar district, came to New Delhi to attend coaching classes to prepare for NEET. Kumari managed to score 171 marks out of 180 in physics, 160 in chemistry and 360 out of 360 in biology, which combines botany and zoology.
"I wanted to be a doctor from a very early age. Right now my aim is to complete MBBS and MS. After completing my studies, I want to be a good doctor and also take care of the poor and the needy by serving them free of cost,” Kumari told Hindustan Times.
Kumari achieved this feat by studying for 12-13 hours daily besides solving several mock test papers. Hard work comes to her naturally says the national topper.
She is also awaiting her Class 12 results and her AIIMS entrance exam results which will be declared on June 18. “She wishes to get into AIIMS, Delhi. Her second preference is Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi,” her sister Bharti said.
Telangana's Rohan Purohit and Delhi's Himanshu Sharma jointly bagged the second position with 690 marks. The third rank was shared by Aarosh Dhamija from Delhi and Prince Chaudhary from Rajasthan, both of whom scored 686 marks.
A total of 13.36 lakh candidates had registered for the exam, a 16.49-per cent increase from last year. However, 12.69 lakh candidates appeared for the test, of whom 7.14 lakh cleared it.
