Stray dog menace rampant in Guntur

Recently on May 30 this year, 20 persons were injured in the stray dogs attack at Chilakaluripeta.

Amaravati: The stray dog menace is rampant and creating severe problems to the public, especially to children in Guntur district.

Nearly 1,800 people are visiting the Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, per month to get treatment for dog bites, which reflects the severity of stray dog bites. The people are pampering stray dogs for the safety of their areas, but sometimes it is proving fatal.

The stray dogs became a common problem to the people of rural and urban areas and in view of increasing dog bite cases, the people are demanding action to restrain stray dog menace.

Recently on May 30 this year, 20 persons were injured in the stray dogs attack at Chilakaluripeta. According to the reports, 13,000 stray dogs are there in Vijayawada city and similarly 12,000 stray dogs in Guntur city. Another 20,000 stray dogs are there in Tenali, Chilakaluripeta, Narasaraopeta, Macharla, Vinukonda, Gurazala and other areas of Guntur district.

According to the GGH officials, nearly 50 to 70 people are visiting the GGH for rabies treatment everyday from various parts of the district and adjacent Krish-na district. The dog bite menace is very severe in Tenali, Macharla, Guntur, Narasaraopeta, Chilakaluripeta, Kakumanu, Vinukonda, Mangalagiri, Bapatla and other areas.

The municipal corporation, municipal and panchayat officials are stating that people used to dump food stuffs on the outskirts and this is promoting stray dogs. They said that people in a majority areas pamperstray dogs to restrain thieves and wandering of unknown persons which is further creating problems. A social activist, C. Vinod said that dogs are pets, so the civic bodies should make licences compulsory for dogs.
