Defiant Chennai lawyers to take out rally
Chennai: The controversy over the recent amendments to rules introduced by Madras high court, which paved the way for debarring advocates from practicing for misconduct, is intensifying with Madras high court advocates association demanding immediate withdrawal of the changes and is firm on going ahead with its rally on June 6.
A day after Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul made it clear there was consultative process at every stage with representatives of various advocates’ associations while framing the amendments to rules, MHAA president R.C.
Paul Kanagaraj on Saturday said there was no consultative process at any stage with representatives of advocates’ associations while framing the amendments by the three high court judges committee.
Welcoming the Chief Justice’s statement that advocates’ suggestions will be considered, Kanagaraj said “We will form a special State-wide committee and formulate our suggestions and submit the same to the Chief Justice”.
Addressing the media, Paul Kanagaraj said merely attending the meeting and signing the minutes, does not mean there was effective consultation. “I attended the first two meetings without even knowing the agenda. During the meetings, the committee informed the representatives of the advocates associations that rules will be framed as per the directions of Supreme Court. But, we were not informed about the rules that were likely to be framed.”
Referring to the Chief Justice’s statement that the rally was unnecessary, Paul Kanagaraj said it will be peaceful without any hindrance to public or litigants. Advocates can participate in the rally after attending court.
