Bengaluru: Bellandur froth poisons Yemlur lake now

Residents in and around Yemlur villages are bearing the burnt.

Bengaluru: The stench from the sewage is only one of the issues, the other is that residents of these villages are being exposed to carcinogenic toxins that could have a long -term impact on the health and the lives of the residents of East Bengaluru.

The main reason behind the 20 feet high clouds of toxins moving from one residential area to another is the short-sightedness of the civic authorities who, instead of finding real time solutions, have preferred to take up the work of building and widening the bridge over Bellandur lake to ease the traffic congestion, and have deliberately diverted the froth and sewage water towards Yemlur Lake.

Residents in and around Yemlur villages are bearing the burnt. "Even the smallest breeze pushes the froth into our homes," villagers said.

Manjunath P, a resident points out, "There is not much space for the froth to move around here unlike Bellandur. There are small bushes as well. Hence, the froth is like a huge wall or a hill. And with the weather so windy, our living rooms, our kitchens are full of froth."

Nanjappa G, another resident says: "We are worried about our children.
Already our children have been falling sick often and now with froth so close we do not know what the repercussions will be."

When DC bought the issue to the notice of MP PC Mohan who have been involved with the issues of the lake, he seemed unaware and assured that he will enquire about the situation on Monday.

It has been over five years since untreated sewage from apartments and industries has been flowing into Bellandur lake primarily from HAL, Domlur, Kormangala and Agara.

The authorities then fenced the entire lake and installed about 4-6 machines near the lake to spray a chemical which the civic agency claim is Japanese technology and helps to subside the smell and the froth. Sadly, it has been of little help.
