Education Minister KT Jaleel seeks report on girl’s suicide attempt

The minister issued the order following allegations that the student tried to end her life due to harassment by SFI leaders.

Thiruvananthapuram: Higher education minister K.T. Jaleel has sought a report from Higher Education principal secretary Usha Titus on the suicide attempt made by a girl student of University College here on Friday. The first-year degree student hailing from Attingal was found in an unconscious state with her veins cut in the women’s resting room of the college on Friday morning.

The minister issued the order following allegations that the student tried to end her life due to harassment by SFI leaders. The principal secretary will seek a report from the college principal before filing her report.

The girl who was admitted to Medical College Hospital is out of danger and was discharged on Saturday morning.

She had written a two-page suicide note alleging that the University Union leaders used to force her to skip classes and attend union functions and even union-led strikes in the college. Due to this she missed many class hours. Even during exam time, she was asked to come out for the union’s programmes. Despite complaining to the principal, no action was taken and her classmates also did not respond out of fear of the political party that backed the union. She had also shared her plight on the social media.

The girl who left home on Thursday did not return and also switched off her mobile phone in the evening. Thereafter, her parents complained to the Attingal police. It was the college staff who saw her in the rest room the next morning.

The Attingal police, who have started an inquiry, are trying to find out whether any personal reason was behind the incident. They said further probe will be carried out only after recording the girl’s statement.
