Coimbatore: Desilt water bodies in Sulur, urges users association

Kaniyoor and Mudhalipalayam are added to the second phase of the groundwater treatment plan of the scheme.

Coimbatore: Assembly by-elections will be held in the Thiruparankundram, Ottapidaram, Aravakurichi and Sulur constituencies on May 19. Ahead of the bypolls, members of the ‘Athikadavu Kousika River Development Association’ have released a set of demands for candidates contesting elections for Sulur.

Of the various demands, association members have focused on water bodies demanding that the waterways and the paths of the waterways of water bodies that come within the Sulur assembly constituency be desilted, besides check dams across the water bodies be rejuvenated.

As far as the Avinashi-Athikadavu groundwater recharge scheme is concerned, members of the association have demanded that water bodies in the Neelambur, Chinniyampalayam, Arasoor, Kaniyoor and Mudhalipalayam are added to the second phase of the groundwater treatment plan of the scheme.

For Somanur, the association has demanded that a government hospital with basic facilities is constructed and infrastructure at the Somanur railway station is upgraded. Establishing a ‘grey cotton’ market in Karumathampatti, besides setting up of a warehouse, government procurement centre and establishing government arts and science colleges in the area are also among the demands made by the association.
