WWF- Telangana volunteers to take part in Dolphin census
Hyderabad: Volunteers from WWF- Telangana will be taking part in the first ever Dolphin survey in the country.
The census will be concentrating on Indus Dolphins that are found only in India and Pakistan.
Although Pakistan is known to have more than 1,500 of these dolphins, there is only a tiny population of the same in Beas river.
Reports state that the dolphin population in India has reduced by nearly fifty percent since 1950.
The Indus river dolphin are not done in close knit groups and is the national mammal of Pakistan.
The census will help in estimating the current population of the species which is crucial to ensure its survival as they are on the red list of endangered species. The species has not been well studied and the census will give necessary data for the same.
