Madras high court notice on PIL against drawing of ground water
Chennai: A PIL has been filed in the Madras high court to direct the authorities to take action against illegal withdrawal of ground water in Thiruvallur district.
The vacation bench comprising Justices V. Bharathidasan and N. Seshasayee before whom the PIL filed by social activist A.Dhanaraj came up for hearing ordered notice, returnable by a week, to the Thiruvallur district collector and the Commissioner of Chennai Corporation.
According to the petitioner, the miscreants embedded more than 10 bore wells and water was drawn out using huge motor sucking pumps and devices in unauthorised manner drawing over 45 lakh liters of water. The water was stolen from the ground with the support of the local politicians and various government officials. The illegally drawn water was sent through tanker lorries by miscreants to various places and they make money by selling the water.
Because of the illegal and unauthorised drawing of water, the people living in Madhavaram, Assisi Nagar, GKM Colony, Kamban Nagar, Shanti Colony, MGC Nagar, Manjapakkam, Ring road housing sector and Mathur, where nearly about 15,000 families were residing, were deprived of their drinking water.
Despite complaints from them, the authorities have failed to take any action. Since the residents of the area were depending on the ground water, the petitioner made a representation to the authorities on March 28. But, there was no response, he added.
