Hyderabad High Court notice to State over undertrial prisoners

The bench pointed out what could be done if the accused are not in a position to furnish the sureties as ordered by the Trial Court.

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad High Court has issued a notice to Telangana government directing it to explain its stand on a Public Interest Litigation seeking to release undertrial prisoners. A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice K. Vijaya Lakshmi was dealing with a PIL filed by one Dr. Murali Karnam seeking to direct the state government to formulate necessary guidelines in accordance with the orders passed by the Supreme Court and High Court in cases pertaining to release of undertrial prisoners.

The bench pointed out what could be done if the accused are not in a position to furnish the sureties as ordered by the Trial Court. It also asked as to who will give guarantee that undertrial prisoners will regularly attend the court for the trial once they are released without any surety.
