Bengaluru: With the state assembly election a week away, the city police are on their toes to ensure that there is no law and order problem.
Anti-social elements and history-sheeters have been warned against indulging in unlawful activity and some may even be taken into preventive custody.
Political activists have also been instructed not to create a ruckus in residential areas and disturb citizens.
A senior police officer said, “We are discussing with the top police officers about taking history-sheeters into preventive custody a day before the election. But it has not been finalized yet.”
He also said that to maintain the law and order in the city, they have summoned around 37 companies of security forces, both from the state and the Centre.
“The central security forces including our state security forces have been roped in. For now we have 37 companies and another four to five will be arriving on Saturday morning. The route marches are being conducted across the city along with the local police. They are posted across all the divisions in the city and at the temporary check posts established by election officials.”
“There have been stray incidents supporters of different parties threatening each other. There is information that Congress supporters tried to stop JD(S) supporters from campaigning in K.R. Puram. All this will be dealt with an iron hand,” the officer said.
People who are canvassing for votes should ensure that the traffic and public are not disturbed, he added.
The officer said that public can approach the police if they are being harassed or threatened by political workers. They can register a complaint and their identity will be kept confidential, he added. Action will be taken by the authorities concerned.
