Thrissur: A total of 101 elephants will be taking part in Thrissur Pooram during May 5 and 6, Thiruvamabadi and Paramekkavu Devaswoms have said. While here will be 54 elephants on the Thiruvambadi side, Paramekkavu will parade 47.

Sivasundar will be carrying the Thidambu of the deity of Thiruvamabdi and Padmanabhan will carry it for Paramekkavu.

Devaswom officials said that all the elephants to be paraded for pooram have been inspected by the forest officials and given fitness certificates.

Water will be sprinkled on all roads through which the elephants are paraded and wet jute sacks will be provided for the pachyderms to stand on during day time and they will be made to stand below pandals that provide shade, they added.

They will also be provided watermelon and cucumber to prevent dehydration.
The Kerala Captive Elephant Maintenance and Management rules ban elephant parade from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. But they are being relaxed for Thrissur Pooram in view of the facilities provided by devaswoms for the pachyderms.
