Left not amused by Rahul Gandhi’s gesture

‘Congress is not serious about fighting BJP despite tall talk’.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rahul Gandhi may not have anything to say against the CPM but the Marxists are gearing up to launch frontal attack on the Congress president not just in Wayanad but across the state.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the actions of the Congress president had proved that he was not interested in joining the national political initiative for building a strong anti-BJP front. The Congress was working against the emerging need for a secular democratic government at the Centre, he said.

The CPM leadership said since Mr Gandhi had chosen to fight against the LDF, every effort would be made to give him a tough fight and ensure his defeat in the constituency. The decision to fight the Left reflected its political duplicity, they feel.

On the one hand the Congress president maintained that his fight in Wayanad was against the BJP which is trying to divide the country on religious lines and which was also creating a north south divide, but when it came to contesting polls he chose a constituency where the BJP is almost non existent.

The Left leaders sought to know from Mr Gandhi if he had nothing to say against the CPM, then why did he come all the way from Delhi to enter electoral fray in Wayanad. “If he was honest about his political line then the Congress president should have opted for Karnataka where his party was pitted against the BJP,” said a leader.

The CPM leaders said the Congress decision reflected its political pauperism and also its failure to visualise a wider anti-BJP front at the national level. Mr Gandhi cannot shy away from the responsibility for contesting against LDF, they say.

“The Congress seems to be caught in its past glory. But the reality is that the Congress today cannot claim to be principal secular party in various states," said CPM politburo member Prakash Karat in an article in the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani.

During the campaign in Wayanad and rest of the constituencies, the CPM would focus on the Congress' alleged backstabbing of secular front.

The Congress stand in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and many other states aimed at wrecking the unity of secular forces against the BJP would also be made a major campaign plank. The Left leaders say the Congress opted out from the formidable front comprising BSP, SP and RLD which was strong enough to give the BJP a befitting defeat in Uttar Pradesh. The party’s reluctance into form an alliance with the Aam Admi Party in Delhi is another example of its wavering, they said.
