Chennai: The city’s first ever Indonesian food festival was opened on a pleasant note with two dancers performing the harvest celebration dance. The food festival is on till April 10 at the Rain Tree hotel on St Mary’s Road with the Indonesian ministry of tourism helping promote it.

Chefs Sukarno Wibowo and Faisal Martadinata are hoping to serve up exciting fare with a difference. Mr. Ade Sukendar, Indonesian Consul General in Mumbai is hoping the food fest will lead to greater appreciation of Indonesia. “Sumatra and Chennai are near each other and so similar in many ways. India and Indonesia have enjoyed ancient ties” he said.  He added that a series of events are being planned in India to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations with his country.

Mr Gaurav Magoo, GM of Rain Tree, St Mary’s Road, was thrilled at his hotel being the first to collaborate with Indonesia and bring a taste of the different foods of over 6,000 islands that make up that country. The a-la-carte festival is on at the Chap Chay restaurant.
