Chennai: Kidnapped businessman rescued in two hours

Chennai: A 26-year-old man manager who was kidnapped for a Rs 5 lakh ransom in the city was rescued by the police in about 90 minutes on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the intended victim, Rahul Chand (26) of Adhiappan Naicker Street at Sowcarpet, is a manager at a mobile manufacturing unit and is involved in businesses related to gadgets in George Town and Sowcarpet.

Police said that at about 8 pm on Wednesday, he and his friend Dileep were drinking juice at a shop in Kilpauk when a man approached Rahul and said he wanted to speak about purchasing some gadgets.

When Rahul and the man crossed the road, an autorickshaw pulled up in front of them and the man pushed Rahul into it. Dileep who saw this rushed to the Kilpauk station and lodged a complaint. Some time later. Dileep received a phone call and the caller demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh. The caller asked him to come near the Bodyguard Muneeswaran temple near the Central Railway station.

A senior police officer said, "We scanned the mobile tower location which pointed to the call being made around Santhome. The kidnap occurred at about 8 pm and an hour later their signal was seen at the mobile tower at Omandurar Hospital."

Police began checking vehicles to nab the kidnappers. "An autorickshaw hit the barricades and tried to escape. We chased it on Anna Salai. On seeing the police, the gang stopped the autorickshaw and started running in different directions but all were nabbed," he said.

Rahul was kidnapped at about 8 pm and rescued at about 9.30 pm. The accused were identified as S. Sarath (27) from Kondithope, S. Rajan (32), V. Magesh (29), K. Thamizharasan (24) from Seven Wells, V. Vimal (21) and C. Soorya (21) from Elephant gate. The six men remanded to judicial custody.
