Kochi Corporation demolishes actor's boat jetty

There was also an allegation that the corporation officials connived with the actor for facilitating the illegal constructions.

Kochi: The Kochi Corporation officials on Wednesday demolished the boat jetty constructed by actor Jayasuraya allegedly after enclosing the Chelavannoor backwaters near the Kochu Kadavanthara area in Kochi.

The action was taken by the corporation officials following the local administration tribunal at Thiruvananthapuram rejecting an appeal filed by Jayasuraya against the demolition. Although there was allegation that the compound wall was also constructed after encroaching the backwaters a decision on demolishing the same will be taken later.

The corporation has earlier served a notice to Jayasuraya in connection with the encroachments. The actor has filed the appeal in the tribunal challenging the action of the local body.

Jayasuraya has been accused of encroaching the backwaters and the revenue land for constructing boat jetty and compound wall in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone rules and building of rules of the corporation.

There was also an allegation that the corporation officials connived with the actor for facilitating the illegal constructions.

The Muvattupuzha vigilance court has ordered a probe into the complaint and found the allegations were having substance. The vigilance court then directed the Kochi corporation to initiate action against the violation.
