Deepthi' to stop children's drug abuse
Kochi: With a view to check rising drug use among children, the Ernakulam district child welfare committee in co-ordination with various other agencies will implement ‘Deepthi’, a comprehensive project aimed at identifying the affected and help them in treating drug addiction.
Minister for Social Justice K K Shailaja will launch the project at the district planning hall in civil station at 11 am on Thursday.
The website of the child welfare committee and ‘Jyothi’, a project for distribution of equipment to differently-abled children, will also be inaugurated on the occasion.
“The project ‘Deepthi’ was initiated after it was found that majority of children produced before the Juvenile Justice Board in the district was in connection with narcotics-related cases. The project aims at identifying children who are into drugs and help them with drug addiction treatment. All kinds of assistance including identification of such children and help them break free from addiction will be made available to them through various departments. Initially, the project will be introduced in government and aided schools,” said a Social Justice official.
The website is being launched with the objective of taking the child protection activities to the larger society. It will serve as a medium for the public to submit complaints at any time and to inform the child protection committee about children in trying circumstances.
