Danger lurks at Pedda Cheruvu in Jalpally

Historians say water from this lake was used for the construction of Charminar and Mecca Masjid.

Hyderabad: Spread over 300 acres, Pedda Cheruvu in Jalpally is an extremely popular hangout spot. People go to the lake for a swim, picnics or just to enjoy sitting by the lakeside. But the lake is now turning out to be an unsafe area, especially for visitors.

In 2017, three youths have drowned in the lake, including a 20-year-old boy on Tuesday, which has rung the alarm bells among swimmers. Can we add some details about today's drowning incident? Think it's important

The Jalpally lake’s history dates to the Qutub Shahi period. It was built in 1591 by the Qutub Shahi rulers to supply water to Hyderabad city. Durgam Cheruvu supplied water to Golconda, while Pedda Cheruvu in Jalpally took care of Hyderabad’s water supply needs.

Historians say water from this lake was used for the construction of Charminar and Mecca Masjid.

“The location on a comparatively elevated surface led to the lake being constructed in Jalpally village. The water flowed for the construction of Charminar due to gravitational force; water would reach Charminar - around 15 kilometres from the lake — without any hurdle,” said M.A. Qayyum, a historian.

But over time, the lake lost its historical significance and turned into a picnic spot. As there is no proper road connectivity, people prefer to go only during the day. But after the recent mishaps at the lake, officials need to start taking measures to avoid any repeats.

“To avoid such incidents, part of the lake — at least that facing the road — should be fenced. More precautionary measures around the lake are a must,” Jalpally MPTC Sheikh Afzal said. He added that if people are not extra careful, such incidents are bound to happen despite comprehensive preventive measures.
