Hyderabad: A team of scientists from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has been selected for the National Geo-science Award-2014 by Centre for developing an ocean forecast and information system for India’s maritime safety and boosting the blue economy. The system has also been extended to Maldives, the Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

The team of scientists headed by Dr T.M. Balakrishnan Nair and comprising Dr R. Harikumar,  Dr Francis P.A., and Ms Sandhya K.G helped place India among the few countries which can prepare operational ocean forecast services.

The Incois scientists developed a user-driven operational ocean prediction system for early warning on the ocean state for fishermen, the oil industry, shipping, port and harbours, maritime boards, coastal tourism departments, marine police, Navy and Coast Guard for safe navigations. Incois had earlier forecast the sea state during Cyclones Phailin and Hudhud.
