National War Memorial built in just 8 months
New Delhi: The National War Memorial, the most recent addition to the list of national monuments, was constructed in eight months, said an official of Delhi-based architecture firm Star Mercantile.
The architectural firm was selected as a specialist stone agency executing stone-related work for the memorial, which used several types of stone including Jaisalmer red granite, Korana Pink Granite, Agra Red and beige sandstone.
The civil work was executed by Hyderabad-based construction company NCC under the guidance of its director A.S.N. Raju.
The project involved laying of different stones in a predetermined pattern and installing the names of 25,942 martyrs on individual stone tablets. The memorial also included an obelisk. The memorial, which was constructed behind New Delhi’s India Gate, also included delicate Rajasthani jali work. Star Mercantile used breakthrough technology for carving and engraving by using both automatic CNC machines and highly skilled artisans.
Explaining the company’s work further, the official said, “From inception to delivery, we were coordinating with NCC, Union defence ministry, principal architects and the memorial. We were able to complete this Herculean task in a record time of eight months because of Mr Raju’s experience in undertaking such projects of national importance.”
The homage was paid to 25,942 martyrs by engraving their names on red granite in golden letters using special technology. These tablets were mounted in a tongue groove system on curved walls.
