Madurai Bench of Madras HC dismisses plea against dole

The state government stated that it had finished the identifying BPL families and launched the distribution of special assistance programme on Monday.

Chennai: The Madurai Bench of Madras high court dismissed public interest litigation seeking a direction to stop the distribution of Rs.2,000 to BPL (Below Poverty Line) families till the completion of Lok Sabha elections.

The plea was dismissed after the government advocate pointed out that a similar petition was dismissed by Madras high vourt citing it was a policy decision of the court.

Petitioner Dineshbabu alleged that the move to distribute Rs 2,000 to the 60 lakh families living under below poverty line would influence the voters and it was announced for election benefits.

Stating that the government’s process of identifying the BPL families in the state is a complex and time-consuming process, he said rushing it would result in leaving out deserving beneficiaries. Hence, demanded to stop the distribution.

The state government stated that it had finished the identifying BPL families and launched the distribution of special assistance programme on Monday.
