Girls outnumber boys in writing plus-2 exams this year

Even among the private candidates, the number of girls is more with 2,702 girl candidates to appear for exams as against 2,329 boys.

Chennai: In a notable trend, the number of girls writing the higher secondary exams has considerably increased compared to that of boys in both plus-1 and plus-2 exams.

According to the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), this year 66,768 (15%) more girl students will appear for plus-1 exams. Of 8,16,618 school students who registered for plus-1 board exams, 4,41,693 of them are girls and 3,74,925 are boys.

Even among the private candidates, the number of girls is more with 2,702 girl candidates to appear for exams as against 2,329 boys.

The officials from DGE said the trend has been the same for the last few years. "Even in the last year, 58,897 more girls wrote the plus 1 exam. Due to the various initiatives from state government and general attitude towards girl's education, now more girl students are pursuing the higher secondary and even higher education," officials pointed out.

Compared to last year, nearly 8,000 more girls are writing the plus-1 exams.

The trend is the same as the plus 2 exams as well. This year 58,905 more girls are writing the plus-2 exams. Of 8.61 lakhs students appearing from schools, 4.6 lakh are girls and 4.01 lakh are boys.

Among the plus 2 candidates, 84,332 students (9%) would appear for their arrear exams during March this year.

"The arrear exams are scheduled, in a way, to not to clash with their regular exams," officials from DGE explained. Further, the candidates would be awarded the same exam centres to write their arrear exams.

The directorate will conduct plus-1 exam in the same 2914 centres where plus 2 exams are being conducted. Totally, 78 prisoners would write plus 1 board exams at Puzh

Among the candidates, 4,54,552 of them are from Tamil medium. 45,300 teachers would be involved in supervising the exams.
