Vijayadharani made women's wing general secretary

The lone woman MLA of the party had a quarrel with Elangovan and filed a complaint with the police.

Chennai: In a major embarrassment to TNCC president E.V.K.S. Elangovan who removed Congress MLA S. Vijayadharani from the post of state women’s wing leader, the party high command elevated her to the position of All India Mahila Congress general secretary.

The lone woman MLA of the party had a quarrel with Elangovan and filed a complaint with the police stating that she was ill treated by the Congress leader at the party headquarters here. Following the complaint, Elangovan supporters condemned her conduct and demanded action on her.

In February, she was removed from the post of state women’s wing leader by the TNCC chief and she challenged the action saying he had no authority to remove her from the post since the nomination was done by the AICC. Her elevation to a higher post has surprised local Congress leaders, who preferred not to comment on the decision of the high command.

Reacting to her elevation, Vijayadharani, who is in Delhi to attend the women legislators conference, played down her differences with Elangovan and said she had no personal problems with anyone. She also added that she would work for the party’s victory in the elections and had no animosity against anyone.

She strongly rejected suggestions that it was a victory for her against Elangovan and said they would work together for the party’s success in the Assembly elections.

She said, “The prime interest is that of people and party and there is no personal enmity between me and Elangovan. Rahulji has recognised my work for the party and my elevation shows that the party will not let down loyal workers”. She will work for the party at the national level too, besides contributing to the growth of Congress in Tamil Nadu.
