Health Minister KK Shylaja promises state cancer registry
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister K.K. Shylaja on Monday said a population based Cancer Registry will be started in the state soon. The minister said at the moment the registry covered only a limited number of districts.
She said the government has decided to set up the population based registry by bringing together Regional Cancer Centre Thiruvananthapuram, Malabar Cancer Centre and Kochi Cancer Centre. The registry is helpful in for cancer prevention, detection and treatment, she said while inaugurating the state level function held in connection with World Cancer Day.
Cancer detection is as important as cancer prevention. Under the Ardram Mission, the government has put up facilities for cancer detection in family health centres, In case of any suspicion regarding cancer; the patient is referred to the higher centres.
The minister said radiotherapy departments are being upgraded in five medical colleges to make these comprehensive centres for cancer care.
Ms Shylaja said majority of cancer cases were directly related to life style. In this context cancer awareness has to be created at all levels.
