Telangana to witness immigrant exodus from Kuwait

The amnesty scheme was granted by the Kuwait government ends on February 22.

Hyderabad: As Kuwait has announced an amnesty scheme to the ‘migrants staying illegally’ in the country, a few thousand people are set to return to Telangana this month.

The amnesty scheme was granted by the Kuwait government ends on February 22. People have two options — either to correct their status by paying the fines or leave the country. According to laws, immigrants staying illegally face jail term and penalty.

Under the amnesty scheme, punishment is waived off and they are allowed leave the country.

“Around 5,000 people from the state have applied for the amnesty and they are in the process of getting the documents to leave the country. Towards the end of this month, we will get a clear picture of how many will return,” M. Bheem Reddy of Migrants Rights Council said.

In the last couple of years, around two lakh people from the state have returned from the Gulf countries. “Mostly, workers in the labour category, employed in various companies, bear the brunt of changing economic conditions and laws,” Gulf JAC convener G. Ravi Goud said.
