Telangana: BJP to block Muslim quota

Dr Laxman on Saturday launched a signature campaign against the 12 per cent Muslim reservations proposal.

Hyderabad: TS BJP president K. Laxman on Saturday said that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre will not accept the TS government’s Muslim Reservation Bill according 12 per cent reservations to the community under any circumstances as it was against the Constitutional principle of not allowing religion-based reservations.

Dr Laxman on Saturday launched a signature campaign against the 12 per cent Muslim reservations proposal at Ambedkar chowrasta in Sangareddy district headquarters.

Stating that Ambedkar himself said during Constituent Assembly debates that any religion-based reservation in the country will divide and destroy the society, the TS BJP chief said that the TRS government was unable to implement its poll promises in the 2.5 years of its rule, but was rushing with the Muslim quota Bill only to woo the community for political benefits.

Dr Laxman however said that the BJP was not against the government taking up reservations for any section of the society, provided it is based on economic backwardness and not religion based.

He asked the CM why his government had not initiated any action plan to uplift BCs, including enhancing reservation for the community, since they form a major part of the state’s population.

“BJP will not allow Muslim Reservation Bill to be passed in Assembly. In case the CM gets it approved in the Assembly, the BJP will stall it by exerting pressure on the Central government,” he said.
