Woman injured in mobile phone blast
CHENNAI: In a third incident of blast of an over-charged mobile phone in Chennai and its surrounding areas in the past 10 days, a 52 year-old woman was injured at her house at Nerkundram on Thursday. The incident occurred at Balakrishna Nagar when the victim, Jhansi, was fast asleep around 3 am. Police said the woman woke up to the blaze inside the house in which she sustained minor injuries. “She ran out of her house when the entire house was on fire. Neighbours alerted the fire service,” said a police officer.
“When inquired, the woman told us that she had left the mobile phone on charge overnight. “The instrument exploded and the fire which started from that spread fast through the mattress. Most part of the house was charred in the incident,” said a senior police officer.
A case was registered by Koyambedu police. The woman was treated for her injuries. On January 25, three of a same family suffered burns in an LPG blaze triggered by mobile phone blast at Vyasarpadi. The blast occurred because of the overheated device left to charge overnight. Two died the same day while the third died a few days later.
On February 2, a nine-year-old boy suffered injuries in both his eyes when the blast occurred when he attempted to answer a call when the mobile was on charge. The boy who lost his vision regained partial vision after treatment.
