Kochouseph Chittilappilly takes anti-stray move to capital

Satyagraha won't be held in front of Secretariat.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Industrialist and organ donation promoter Kochouseph Chittilappilly will hold a 24-hour satyagraha from 12 pm on February 20 at LMS ground protesting the lack of persistent efforts from the state government in ending stray dog menace.

Mr Chittilappilly had staged similar satyagrahas at Kozhikode and Kochi demanding amendment in Animal Birth Control Rules 2001 that discourages culling of stray dogs.

“Due to influential dog lovers, the corporation and panchayat officials are afraid of culling dogs. State government’s stand on the issue is obscure as it just stated that dangerous dogs can be culled. How do we know whether a dog is dangerous? Every dog on the street can potentially bite a child,” he said.

He pointed out that Nagaland government does not entertain complaints made against dog culling in spite of same ABC rules applying to that state also.

Chittilappilly says that though he tried to reach out to Maneka Gandhi on the issue, the Central cabinet minister had not yet responded.

“Some state BJP leaders have personally said they empathise with the cause of culling street dogs,” he added.

Satyagraha won't be held in front of Secretariat, as usual, to avoid any kind of traffic disruption, he added.

The organisation named Stray Dog Free Movement he started has until now spent around '5 lakh for the treatment of around 50 needy people who were bitten by strays.
